The prophecy of Psalms 83 was fulfilled in June 1967: the Six Day War

The war unfolding today between Israel on one side and Hamas, Hezbollah and certain proxies of Iran on the other is neither Psalms 83 nor Ezekiel 38 and 39. What is unfolding now involves the Seven Seals of the Apocalypse.

Ezekiel 38 and 39, the prophecy of Gog of Magog, will happen after the Millennial Reign of Jesus Christ.

And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.

Revelation 20:7-8

The war of Psalms 83 was fulfilled in the Six Day War of 1967.

In that war, Iran was not a belligerent. Neither is Iran mentioned in words of Psalms 83.

Psalms 83, which is a prophecy, a song, and a prayer to God, speaks of a war that involves God’s people, “thy people” (ref. Psalms 83:3), and the enemies of God, “thine enemies” (ref. Psalms 83:2).

A Song or Psalm of Asaph. Keep not thou silence, O God: hold not thy peace, and be not still, O God. For, lo, thine enemies make a tumult: and they that hate thee have lifted up the head. They have taken crafty counsel against thy people, and consulted against thy hidden ones. They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.

Psalms 83:1-4

On 23 May 1967, Egypt’s Nasser blockaded the Straits of Tiran, and thereafter conspired especially with Syria’s Assad and the United Arab Republic, and later with Jordan’s Hussein, to cut off Israel from being a nation, and to avenge the Arab-Israeli war of 1948 and also the Suez war of 1956.

In 1956, Israel, Britain and France were on one side and in effect Egypt, the USA and the USSR were on the other. This is because the USA and the USSR used the UN to force Israel, Britain and France to surrender the Suez to Egypt, a move that weakened the British Empire and emboldened Egypt.

In 1967, Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, and the Palestinians, as in the Palestinian Liberation Organisation in Lebanon, were confederate against Israel, and they went to war against Israel. This is precisely Psalms 83:5-8.

For they have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate against thee: The tabernacles of Edom, and the Ishmaelites; of Moab, and the Hagarenes; Gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek; the Philistines with the inhabitants of Tyre; Assur also is joined with them: they have holpen the children of Lot. Selah.

Psalms 83: 5-8

Ishmaelites and Hagarenes: Egypt
Assur: Iraq and Syria, i.e. Assyria
Edom, Moab, Ammon, Amalek, and the children of Lot: Jordan
Gebal and Tyre: Lebanon
Philistines with the inhabitants of Tyre: The PLO in Lebanon

The combined might of all of these Arab nations could not prevail against Israel in 1967, for the LORD of hosts was with Israel, per Psalms 83.

The 1967 war gave the modern state of Israel control, for the first time, of all of Jerusalem, notably the Temple Mount.

The Israeli Defence Forces entered the old city of Jerusalem from the east side, through the Lion’s Gate, which is also known as Stephen’s Gate, named after the first Christian martyr (ref. Acts 7:58-59).

During the Six Day War, there were a number of miracles. Clearly, per Psalms 83, the LORD of hosts was with Israel in that war!

Hand of God during the Six Day War

The Six Day War also saw Israel capture the Gaza strip, the West bank of the Jordan river, the Golan heights, and the Sinai peninsula.

In 1979, the USA made Israel cede the Sinai peninsula back to Egypt, as part of an American brokered peace treaty between Israel and Egypt.

Significantly, the war in 1967 was finished in six days, before the seventh day, because there was an important point to it and that point must be understood.

And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.

Genesis 2:2

In the year 1967, the enemies of God were supposed to learn that “Allah” is not greater, so that they might repent of their error and seek the true God in heaven. This is precisely the message of Psalms 83:16-18.

Fill their faces with shame; that they may seek thy name, O LORD. Let them be confounded and troubled for ever; yea, let them be put to shame, and perish: That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.

Psalms 83:16-18

All people need to know that the LORD, יהוה, is the most high God (ref. Psalms 83:18), and so the outcome of war is determined by him, the Almighty.
